Armed robbers on Monday stole more than K3.5 million from a Blantyre based businessman outside a commercial bank in the  city.

The robbers attacked and stole the money from the trader as he was about to get into FDH bank which is along the Chilembwe road where he wanted to deposit the cash.

Narrating the ordeal, a guard for the bank told capital fm reporters who visited the scene that two robbers demanded the cash from the business man just at the front door of the bank.

He said they wielded pistols before they threatened the trader using a panga knife and snatched a plastic bag containing the cash.

Another eye witness also corroborated the story, adding that after snatching the bag, they sped off in a waiting car nearby.

This attack comes against the background of continued concerns over security lapses across the country.

And speaking to capital fm recently deputy commissioner of police responsible for community policing services George Medi appealed to business operators to engage the police when transferring cash to the bank.

Medi further condemned what he termed as routine cash transfer activities without police escort which he said exposes them to attacks by robbers.
