Politicians and the public have been encouraged to emulate the selfless and devoted spirit of one of the country’s true sons, the late Willie Chokani.

The remarks were made by friends and relatives of the late Chokani as he was being laid to rest yesterday at his home village in Blantyre.

In 1961 Chokani was elected as member of the legislative council for Chiradzulu district before his appointment as Minister of Labour in Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s government.

The expulsion of 3 cabinet Ministers in Kamuzu’s government prompted Chokani to resign in sympathy with his colleagues that had been dismissed.

In 1964 he fled to Zambia and returned in 1993.  He served as Ambassador to the US, Ethiopia and later as High Commissioner to Namibia.

The late Chokani became the headmaster of Kansenshi Secondary School.

President Mutharika who attended late Chokani’s funeral said the former envoy was as a selfless man who always put his country ahead of his own interests.

Chokani who died in Blantyre on May 5 after a heart failure.

Mutharika said the late Chokani would be remembered as a beacon of excellence who always put education and good health at the centre of his life and among all that surrounded him.

Speaking through the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda, Mutharika said the late Chokani was always keen on making sure that not only his children but other Malawians too, get the best out of life.

“The late Chokani will be remembered for his dedication to his country. He always helped others get an education, as he was himself an educationist,” said the president.

“Although he spent his life in exile, he always made sure to keep in touch with people back home, those he had worked with in the Malawi Congress Party-MCP as a politician and those he had helped to get educated,” he added.

According to Kanjedza Kamwendo who gave a eulogy on behalf of the family, the late Chokani was a man who always pursued excellence in all his dealings either through education as he was once a teacher and headmaster or as a politician under the MCP rule.

All his three sons, Dr Khami Chokani, Professor Ndaona Chokani and Sekera Chokani spoke highly of the man, whom they described as their pillar and source of wisdom, strength and love.

The late Chokani, who was born on 30th June 1930, attained his MA degree in India and was once member of Parliament for Chiradzulu district in 1961.

The late Chokani is survived by three sons, Dr Khami, a medical doctor in Canada, Prof. Ndaona, a scientist in Switzerland and Sekera Chokani who is an engineer in Canada. He also had three grandchildren
