Teen girls in Malawi's central region district of Ntcheu are at higher risk of contracting HIV/Aids than their male counterparts, officials have disclosed.

The ratio of girls to boys who are said to be HIV positive in the district is currently at 6:1.

District authorities attribute the trend to several reasons with cultural factor being the main contributing factor.

The Ntcheu district aids coordinator disclosed that the district will roll out intervention that will help to scale down the rate at which girls are contracting the virus.

Robert Kanyesi stated that some cultural practices in the district need to be eliminated since they do not favor teen girls.

"Girls are being forced into early marriages with older men hence risk of them contracting the virus remains high.

"Most Parents are dragging young girls to teen marriages citing poverty so in turn they receive favors from their kids after getting married," Kanyesi explained.

Some religious beliefs prohibit their followers from seeking medical attention

The Ntcheu district aids coordinator however faulted some religious beliefs to be contributing to the district high HIV prevalence rate.

"Some religious beliefs prohibit their followers from seeking medical attention whenever they fall ill, a development putting lives of many at risk of catching the virus.

"Therefore I am appealing to all faith leaders in the district to be vigilant in disseminating messages that will help to reduce the prevalence," Kanyesi concluded.

Chairperson for district interfaith aids coordinating committee a grouping of religious denominations who are in the forefront fighting against the pandemic sided with Kanyesi on the behavior of such faith groups.

Bishop Moffat Litchapa warns that they will do away with such religious groups stating they are negatively contributing to government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic among citizenry.

Currently HIV prevalence rate for Ntcheu remains at 12.1% which is the highest among central region districts.

And the district prevalence is also high; surpassing the national HIV prevalence rate which still remains at 10%.
