The Unima Council wants a 400 percent fees hike in a bid to improve tertiary education whose poor standards’ it argues have been attributed to inadequate resources.
If the proposal is passed, it will see government-sponsored students paying MK275, 000 from the current MK55, 000 per year.
Some of those of those who spoke to Capital FM described the 400 percent fees hike proposal as too high comparing the prevailing rising cost of living.
“If we are currently struggling to pay K50, 000 for our children, how do they expect us to pay K250, 000? That’s insane..,” said one in the streets of Blantyre.
Another said: “Much as the tuition fees hike in the public colleges in inevitable, but I think 400 percent is just way too much.”
The Unima Council last raised the public college fees in 2013.
